Digital Transgender Archive

The photographs in this collection depict trans women living in Paris in the mid 20th century and were taken by Swedish photographer Christer Strömholm during his time living in Pigalle. Place Blanche was home to Paris' transsexual community. It was known for its night life, including as a hub for sex work. Many of the women depicted engaged in sex work to raise money for gender-affirming care. A selection of photos from this series was first published in a book titled "Les Amies de Place Blanche" in Sweden in 1983. The book contains essays from Strömholm about his work; the 2011 edition includes additional materials, such as the stories of Nana and Jacky, two women who developed close friendships with Strömholm and are prominently featured in the photographs. This collection has been provided by: Joakim Strömholm and the Strömholm Estate.
